What happens if your flight home is delayed and you overstay airport parking?
You pay for the extra time, usually charged by the day, but most airports' own car parks give you a few hours' grace first: six hours at Manchester, Stansted and Edinburgh, four at London Southend and under two at Luton. Gatwick and Heathrow name no grace period on their parking pages. Once past the grace period, the extra time is charged at the car park's overstay or drive-up rate, which is usually far higher than the pre-booked rate. If you know about the delay before your booking ends, extending it online is often possible, and cheaper.
The rules at each airport
These are the rules for parking booked directly with the airport, taken from each airport's own pages on 27 October 2026. If you booked through a comparison site or with a car park that the airport doesn't run, that operator's terms apply instead (see below).
| Airport | Grace period after your booked exit time | What you pay after that | Can you extend the booking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester | 6 hours | Each extra day at the car park's overstay rate | Not stated in its FAQ |
| London Stansted | 6 hours | The car park's overstay rate | Amendments must be made at least 72 hours before your parking starts |
| Edinburgh | 6 hours | Normal gate prices for that car park, per day | Yes, online, once, up to 1 hour before your original exit time |
| London Southend | 4 hours | The car park's 24-hour turn-up rate | No, once the booking has started: make a new booking from the time it runs out |
| London Luton | Under 2 hours in total | A full 24 hours at the drive-up rate shown at the entrance, for each extra 24 hours or part of one | Not stated in its FAQ |
| London Gatwick | None stated | A fixed fee for each extra day (below) | Yes, through myGatwick |
| London Heathrow | None stated | The daily rate for the extra time | Yes, through Manage your booking, while the booking is still running |
The details that catch people out
Gatwick charges a set fee for each late day
Gatwick's parking FAQ says an overstay fee applies if you come back later than booked, for whatever reason, and that it is charged for each day you are late. The fees it lists are:
- £15 a day: Long Stay, Mid Stay South, Robotic Parking and Gatwick Holiday Parking
- £30 a day: Valet Parking
- £50 a day: Short Stay
- £60 a day: Premium Parking and Mid Stay North
- £80 a day: Premium Mid Stay
Extending through myGatwick costs your booking's current daily rate, with no amendment fee, if you do it at least 24 hours before your original exit time. Valet customers coming back at a different time are asked to email the valet operator, Times24, at [email protected] with their registration and booking reference.
Luton counts your whole stay, not just the return
Luton's overstay charge applies when your car stays in the car park two hours or more longer than your total booking period. That total includes arriving early, so an early drop-off and a late return add together. The charge is paid at the exit barrier by credit or debit card, or, for Priority Parking, at its reception desk in Terminal Car Park 1.
Edinburgh's extensions can't be undone
Edinburgh lets you extend a booking online once, by up to 30 days, from 24 hours before it starts until one hour before your original exit time. You pay only for the extra period, but the extension can't be cancelled or refunded once confirmed. It also lets you arrive up to two hours early at no extra cost.
Southend's grace works both ways
Southend allows four hours either side of both your booked entry and exit times, which it says is meant to absorb ordinary flight delays. Beyond that, you can't extend a booking that has already started; you make a new one covering the time from when the first runs out to your new return.
Manchester and Stansted measure from your booked exit time
Both airports' FAQs say overstay charges apply only if you leave the car park more than six hours after the exit date and time on your booking. Manchester's booking page puts it as up to six hours' free overstay when a flight is delayed. Both point to the car parking terms and conditions, Section 6, for the overstay rates themselves.
If you booked with someone else
Comparison sites and off-airport car parks set their own grace periods and overstay charges, and they vary widely. Look in your booking confirmation for the operator's terms. If you booked Meet and Greet, tell the operator about a delay as soon as you know: Manchester and Stansted both ask Meet and Greet customers to contact the team early, so your car is ready when you land.
What to do if your flight is delayed
- Work out your new exit time and compare it with your booking plus the grace period in the table.
- If you will go over, see whether you can still extend online. Gatwick's cheapest extension needs 24 hours' notice; Edinburgh's closes an hour before your original exit time; Heathrow's closes when the booking ends.
- If you can't extend, expect to pay at the barrier, so keep a credit or debit card with you.
Whether an airline or travel insurer will repay a parking overstay depends on their own terms, which this page doesn't cover.
